  • Green muclei reflect the subcellular localization of a protein fusion between PacC27 and GFP. Note that the Golgi is not dissasembled during mitosis. Details may be found in Pantazopoulou and Peñalva (2009) Mol. Biol. Cell 20:4335-4347. The pH signal transduction pathway involves endocytic membrane trafficking and is regulated at the level of nucleocytoplasmic transport. Filamentous fungal cells represent an extreme example of polarization and are coenocytic, with several evenly spaced nuclei per cell. Thus, the hyphal cellular organization imposes spatial and temporal requirements on signal transduction pathways whose analysis in a lower eukaryote amenable to relatively easy genetic manipulation is of intrinsic interest.
